Every used car listing shows you what the seller wants you to see. Clean photos, a flattering description, a price that seems fair. What the listing does not show you is where that car has been and what happened to it along the way.
That information exists, and most of it is free. It starts with seventeen characters stamped on the car itself.
Finding the number
The VIN is on the driver side of the dashboard where it meets the windshield, visible from outside the car looking in. It is also on a sticker in the driver door jamb, and it appears on the registration and insurance paperwork. Any honest online listing includes it. If a seller will not give you the VIN, that is your answer about the seller, and you can stop there.
Every car built since 1981 has exactly seventeen characters in its VIN. Not sixteen, not eighteen. They are letters and numbers, but you will never see the letters I, O, or Q anywhere in a VIN, because they look too much like 1 and 0. What each part of the number means
The VIN is not a random serial number. It is a code, and each position has a job.

The first three characters tell you who built the car and where. They are the fastest sanity check you have: a Ford wearing a Honda manufacturer code is not a Ford.
Characters four through eight describe the car itself. This section is where a decoder earns its keep, because each manufacturer encodes these differently. The same five characters mean one thing on a Honda and something else entirely on a Chevrolet. This is also the part that catches sellers describing a car as a trim level it never was.
The ninth character is a check digit, essentially math built into the number to prove the rest of the VIN is legitimate. If someone typos a VIN or invents one, the check digit will not match. The tenth character is the model year. Recent years run R for 2024, S for 2025, and T for 2026. This one is worth a personal glance, because it needs to match what the listing says and what the title says. A year that does not line up is not a small clerical thing. It is a reason to walk.
The eleventh character is the assembly plant, and the last six are the vehicle's individual serial number, the thing that makes it different from every identical car that rolled off the line beside it.

Everything above comes from the VIN itself, which means it is all frozen at the moment the car was built. The VIN knows the factory. It does not know a single thing about what happened after the car left it.
A VIN decoder cannot tell you the car was rear ended in its second year, sat in floodwater in its fourth, or had three owners in eighteen months. What a history report adds
A history report is tied to the same VIN, but instead of decoding the number it looks up everything that got reported against it over the years.
